President Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure plan is moving forward after months of talks. His plan includes “significant investments in roads, bridges, railways and broadband internet” according to NPR. The plan will primarily break down into two areas – Transportation and Other Infrastructure.

How does this affect government contractors? It depends on your focus, so we see it broken down in three ways.

  • If you focus, as a small business, on State and Local (SLED) contracts, then you will have many opportunities in the area of transportation.
  • If you focus on Federal contracts, you will do better going after the “Other Infrastructure” contracts.
  • If you focus on SLED and Federal contracts, you will have many opportunities in both areas.

To give you an idea of how this looks we break down the areas. As we learn more, we will update the list:

Transportation

  • Roads, bridges, major projects: $110 billion (mostly via state and local government grants)
  • Passenger and freight rail: $66 billion (Amtrak and state and local government grants)
  • Public transit: $39 billion (mostly via state and local government grants)
  • Airports: $25 billion (mostly via state and local government grants)
  • Port infrastructure: $17 billion (mostly via state and local government grants)
  • Transportation safety programs: $11 billion (mostly via state and local government grants)
  • Electric vehicles: $7.5 billion (most likely half will go to manufacturers and dealers and a half to state and local governments)
  • Zero and low-emission buses and ferries: $7.5 billion (mostly via state and local government grants)
  • Revitalization of communities: $1 billion (mostly via state and local government grants)

Other infrastructure

  • Broadband: $65 billion (most likely Commerce Department)
  • Power infrastructure: $73 billion (most likely Department of Energy)
  • Clean drinking water: $55 billion (Most likely EPA)
  • Resilience and Western water storage: $50 billion (Most likely the Department of Energy and/or the Department of the Interior)
  • Removal of pollution from water and soil: $21 billion (Most likely EPA)

The next question is how you find and get notified of infrastructure contract opportunities. The good news is that BC2Match gives you the tools to find SLED and Federal contracts in one place. We use up to 12 criteria to match you with the best opportunities and you can see the real-time results in your SLED and Federal dashboards.
