If you are a federal contractor, you know your company’s North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes by heart. These codes are the key to monitoring new contract opportunities in the SAM.gov system, and in creating your BC2Match profile. It would seem they are locked in stone.
But keep these things in mind:
- Your company’s products and services may fit multiple code definitions, so be sure to include ALL the codes when you put your search criteria into SAM.gov and when you prepare your one-page capability statement to pass to potential buyers. For example, if you provide equipment, do you also provide repair services? Consumable supplies? Sell wholesale and retail? They may be under other NAICS codes.
- The industry standards change from time to time…have you updated your codes to the latest revision? The most recent changes were published in 2022, to be completely implemented by 2027. That means there are instants where contracting personnel are using old codes.
- Codes often have very broad definitions. Put keywords in your SAM.gov listing to help focus the firehose on the opportunities that meet your capabilities best. Don’t overlook other opportunities in the NAICS category, but bring those that match keywords to the top of the dashboard.
- Contracting personnel may pick up the NAICS code used on the last acquisition of the product or service, but it may not be the most applicable. If you see a situation like this, reach out first to the CO and request a modification to the RFP/IFB. If that doesn’t work, file with SBA’s Office of Hearings and Appeals, not GAO, as GAO does not have jurisdiction in this situation.
And be sure to modify your NAICS codes when your business changes, say by adding a new product line or service. You’ll be glad you did!
